Substitute Teacher - Lower School

Job Description

The Substitute teacher reports to the applicable Lower School Division Director and is an integral part of the classroom support team. Subs are called upon based on varying school needs.

Responsibilities

  • Supervising students during class, lunch, and periods of activity
  • Following the lesson plan provided by the teacher
  • Facilitating lessons with various learning materials
  • Promoting good behavior and high-quality engagement
  • Collaborating with lead teachers, assistant teachers, and school administrators to ensure that students are safe
  • Managing the classroom to encourage student participation, minimize distractions, and maintain a positive learning atmosphere
  • Adapting teaching methods to meet the individual needs of your students
  • Supervising students both inside and outside the classroom This includes the hallways, the playground, and the cafeteria
  • Attending parent-teacher conferences if necessary
  • Meeting each class on-time and ensuring the classroom and work area are clean and tidy
  • Giving details to the teacher about what happened in class
  • Floating throughout the day as needed for coverage
  • Respecting all school policies and regulations at all times

Requirements

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to lead and instruct students of varying ages
  • Ability to adapt plans to specific classroom needs 
  • Flexibility, critical thinking, and patience-related interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work a variable schedule, consistent with school needs
  • Bachelor’s degree in education is preferred
  • Valid First Aid, Adult and Infant CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency is a plus

The salary for this position is $25/hr.

School Psychologist

Position Overview

City and Country School seeks a thoughtful, collaborative, and child-centered School Psychologist to support the social-emotional and mental health needs of students from the IIs through the XIIIs (nursery through Grade 8). This is a full-time, 10-month position reporting to the Director of Student Support. The School Psychologist is an integral member of the student support team and plays a key role in partnering with students, families, teachers, and administrators to foster a healthy, supportive learning environment.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with faculty, learning specialists, and administrators to support the mental health and social-emotional development of students ages 2–13.
  • Conduct classroom observations and provide consultation to teachers and staff regarding behavior, development, and emotional well-being.
  • Provide short-term, goal-oriented support for students and facilitate referrals for external therapeutic services when appropriate.
  • Maintain strong relationships and regular communication with outside providers, including therapists, neuropsychologists, and related service professionals.
  • Partner with Division Directors to offer consultation on parenting and lead a parent education series on child development, emotional wellness, mental health, and parenting.
  • Serve on the school’s Crisis Management Team, contributing expertise to crisis response, safety planning, and emotional recovery efforts.
  • Participate in various student support and grade-level team meetings to assess student needs and ensure coordinated support plans.
  • Maintain appropriate records in line with ethical and legal standards.
  • Support school-wide initiatives that promote physical, social, and emotional health and well-being including the direct teaching of lessons and/or units on developmentally appropriate topics responsive to the various age groups and developed in partnership with Division Directors, teachers, and other support staff.

Qualitifcations

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in School Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Counseling, or a related field
  • A minimum of 3–5 years of experience working with children ages 2–13 in school or clinical settings
  • Strong understanding of child development, learning differences, and emotional wellness in early childhood through adolescence
  • Experience with parent education and collaboration with outside providers
  • Warmth, discretion, flexibility, and the ability to build trust across a diverse school community
  • Commitment to progressive education and the mission of City and Country School

This position has a salary range of $100,000 - $130,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications.  This full-time bargaining unit position is in-person five days per week at the school’s campus in Manhattan’s West Village.
